What Are the Benefits of Using Dustless Sandblasting on Wood?

websitebuilder • Jul 30, 2021

If you have some wooden sheds or buildings on your site, then you might need to refurbish them eventually. For example, dirt from your operation might discolour and stain the wood. Paints and coatings might start to peel away and expose the underlying wood.

You might also want to simply clean up the buildings. Or, you might want to strip off old paint and repaint the structures to make them sound again. In either case, dustless sandblasting could solve your problem.

What are the advantages of using dustless sandblasting on wood?

Get a non-damaging clean

Wood is a strong material; however, you can easily damage it when you clean or strip it. For example, chemical or heat-powered paint strippers can damage the surface. They can leave burn marks and warp the wood.

Regular sandblasting can be problematic here too. If the wood is soft or has a lot of coatings on it, then a regular blast might burn or warp the wood. It might leave pits in the surface.

While you can cover the wood with paint or sealant, underlying damage can cause problems down the line. If the wood isn't sound, it will start to break down eventually.

Dustless sandblasting is a gentler process. This technique mixes the blast media with water.

As long as you use the right media, the water reduces the strength of the blast. It also prevents the wood from heating up. So, you can strip off multiple coats and get an intensive clean without leaving any damage behind.

Get a more effective clean

Even if you use industrial sanding equipment on your wood buildings and structures, you might find it hard to completely strip all the wood effectively. Some areas, like edges and corners, might be inaccessible; you might not be able to get the machine into these tight spots.

So, you might have to switch to manual sanding on parts of the structure. You might not get the completely clean finish you're looking for.

If you use dustless sandblasting, then the machine cleans the whole surface. It can work just as effectively on hidden or hard-to-reach areas as on clear runs.

As long as you can point the machine at the area you want to blast, it will remove the surface layers consistently and evenly. All of your wood will get the same level of clean or strip.

So, when you repaint or reseal the wood, you'll work on a clean and sound surface. The building will look as good as new.

Get a faster clean

While a sanding machine works faster than manual sanding, you still won't necessarily see quick results. For example, cleaning or stripping a larger structure or building can be a time-consuming and labour-intensive job.

If the wood has a lot of old paint on it, then you might have to make a few passes over the surface to remove all the coatings. They might leave stains and marks on the wood that you have to tackle by hand.

Dustless sandblasting is a quick and easy process. It can cut through multi-layered paint and coatings with one sweep. The job will take a lot less time.

Get a more cost-effective solution

The longer you need to clean up your wood buildings and structures, the more you are likely to pay. Your material, labour and clean-up costs could be high, especially if you have to divert some of your crew away from their regular work to do this job.

If you bring in a dustless sandblasting specialist, then you can let them get on with the job. They won't need much time to finish the work and they'll make very little mess, so you can keep your costs as low as possible.
